Spiva Center for the Arts Announces First Exhibits of 2020
Joplin, MO
01/08/2020 04:50 PM

Spiva Center for the Arts is excited to be presenting two exceptional photography exhibits from January 11 through early March.

Patty Carroll’s “Anonymous Women: Camouflage and Calamity” focuses on women and their relationship to their surroundings.  Through her use of vintage, color saturated fabrics, and props ranging from shoes and purses to pots and pans, Carroll shows us the humorous, but sometimes dark relationship between women and their possessions. 3-D installations also offer visitors the chance to peek behind the scenes to see how these complex photographs are created.  Carroll will also be presenting a formal “Artist's Talk” at 11:00am, on Saturday, January 11.

“Flexible Itineraries: Far From the Madding Tourist Bus” features images created by Joplin photographers Ron Erwin and Thao Nguyen.  This married couple has documented their international travels with haunting portraits and landscapes from around the world.  Their very different perspectives result in two distinct interpretations of the world around us.  Both Erwin and Nguyen have received honors at the annual PhotoSpiva competition.

An opening reception will be held from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Friday, January 10, and the exhibits open to the public on Saturday, January 11.

George A. Spiva Center for the Arts was founded in 1947 and is located at 222 West 3rd Street, Joplin, Missouri.  Hours are from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment.
