A commitment to Leadership Development is
a common practice in high performing organizations.
I am the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at MSSU. Prior to accepting this position, I practiced medicine for 19 years, then served the past 12 years as a healthcare executive for Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri. Last year I wrote a book entitled, “Planning for Organizational Success – A
Leadership Guide to Achieving Success with a Plan” (Dorrance Publishing). The book presents an approach to strategic planning that focuses on not just how to write a plan, but on how to achieve success with a plan. Organizational strategic planning is an important leadership skill. Unfortunately, it is a practice that is often underutilized. Leaders are hesitant to commit to the process due to a history of previous strategic planning efforts being expensive and resource-consuming with lackluster results that were not sustained.
The concept of “Planning for Organizational Success” and my presentation, is that a well written plan should be much more than just a plan. If leadership sees the planning process as building a platform to drive success in their organization, understands the value of the process, and focuses on achieving success as a result of the plan rather than just focusing on writing a plan, a strategic plan really can become a dynamic force that drives success in your organization.
