Founded in 1916, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) began as one of the nation’s first colleges of osteopathic medicine and has grown to become the eighth largest medical school in the nation and the largest medical school in Missouri.

In 2017, the University opened a second campus in Joplin, the KCU Farber-McIntire Campus, marking a significant milestone in the University’s history. KCU-Joplin was made possible through partnerships between KCU and Mercy Hospital Joplin, Freeman Health System, the City of Joplin and philanthropic leaders from Joplin and the surrounding communities.

As the only medical school campus in southwest Missouri, KCU-Joplin seeks to provide educational opportunities for students who want to study and practice medicine in the area, rather than relocating after receiving their medical degree. As the region experiences a growing need for physicians, KCU-Joplin will help provide new doctors who will expand access to primary care. Currently, KCU is the second-largest provider of physicians in Missouri and Kansas, with more than 60 percent of alumni practicing in primary care specialties. In Fall 2020, the College of Osteopathic Medicine will reach full enrollment with 600 total students and will have added approximately 100 new jobs, creating an estimated annual economic impact of $120 million to the region.

In June 2019, KCU announced the development of a College of Dental Medicine on the Farber-McIntire campus to help meet the great demand for dentists and solve the oral health crisis in the Four State region. The KCU College of Dental Medicine is projected to open in the fall of 2022 and will matriculate a class of 80 students each year, creating a further economic impact of $45 million to the region.

“There’s something special about Pittsburg State University.” This is the answer you’re likely to get when you ask any of the University’s 65,000 alumni about their experience at Pittsburg State. It’s the result of a unique combination of nationally-recognized academics, caring faculty, affordable tuition and an incredibly supportive community.

Founded in 1903, Pittsburg State University has positioned itself as one of the leading academic institutions in the Midwest. Its four colleges boast some of the most advanced academic programs in the region and have been recognized by national publications such as U.S. News and World Report, Entrepreneur Magazine and The Princeton Review. Pittsburg State’s 440-acre campus provides the University’s 7,000 students with a traditional college experience in the comfort of a small town. Its popular tuition plans allow many out-of-state students to attend at in-state rates or reduced cost, and every full-time student can take additional courses at no additional charge.

Pittsburg State is the only university in the nation to feature a Gorilla as a mascot. Its 10 athletic programs compete at the NCAA Division II level and regularly compete for conference and national championships. Students at Pittsburg State feel at home from the moment they step on campus. This has as much to do with the city of Pittsburg as it does with the University’s incredible campus. Conveniently located in southeast Kansas, the 20,000 residents of Pittsburg love their university and it shows. Red and gold banners, concrete Gorillas and University logos can be found throughout the city. Pittsburg State students quickly realize that they have become part of something special. They have become Gorillas, and, as we say, “Once a Gorilla, Always a Gorilla.”
